Why Might You Want to Use an ECV in Disney?

Did you know that a typical Disney day is over 10 miles of walking? For your average person that is rough on your feet, but if you have knee issues, back issues, fatigue issues, or more, it can be next to impossible. 

ECVs make Disney accessible to almost anyone! 

At Walt Disney World, a variety of Electric Conveyance Vehicles (ECVs) are available to cater to the diverse needs of guests with limited mobility. These specialized vehicles provide an extra layer of accessibility, ensuring that everyone can partake in the enchanting experiences the theme parks have to offer. 

Types of ECVs in Disney World

Disney World only offers one type of ECV to rent in the parks. Each park has a rental station, including Disney Springs. These ECVs are a bit bulkier than some other types of scooters, but they are convenient. You won’t have to deal with getting your ECV on or off transportation vehicles because you return them before exiting the park. 

There is an endless list of rental companies around Orlando, Florida that will deliver to your resort. You can choose different features for your perfect ECV.  Compact, shaded, long lasting, heavy duty, and even pink! (More on that in our personal experience section at the bottom of the article.)

It’s important to note that the availability of specific types of ECVs may vary depending on the park and the rental location. Guests are encouraged to inquire about the different options when making arrangements for ECV rentals. How Much Do ECV Rentals Cost?

In general, the rental cost for an ECV at Disney World may start at around $50 per day for a standard ECV. Other types of ECVs, such as heavy-duty models or two-seater options, may have higher rental rates. Additionally, there may be multi-day rental packages available at a discounted rate.

You will likely find a better deal through a third party company. You can reserve exactly what you want for the exact amount of time that you need. The disadvantage is figuring out how to get it to and from the parks. If you are driving yourself, DON’T BOTHER! Those ECVs are insanely heavy. Like 200 lbs.

  ECVs are allowed on Disney buses. They typically have designated spaces for ECVs to be securely parked during transportation. However, it’s important to note that these spaces are limited, and availability may vary. ECV users should be prepared for the possibility that a bus with available space may not always be immediately accessible.
  
• Monorails
  ECVs are generally allowed on Disney monorails. There is a designated area within the monorail cars where ECVs can be accommodated. Monorails provide convenient transportation between certain resorts and Magic Kingdom or Epcot.
  
• Boats and Ferries

Places Where You Can’t Use an ECV

This is primarily due to the design and layout of the attraction queue, ride vehicles, or safety considerations.

Here are a few examples of attractions that require guests using ECVs to transfer to a wheelchair for queue entry and attraction experience:

• Pirates of the Caribbean (Magic Kingdom)
  Due to the nature of the boats and the boarding process, guests using ECVs might be required to transfer to a wheelchair to access the attraction.
  
• It’s a Small World (Magic Kingdom)
  Similar to Pirates of the Caribbean, the boats used in this attraction may require guests in ECVs to transfer to a wheelchair for access.

For a day at a Disney park, where you might be using the ECV to navigate between attractions, shows, restaurants, and other areas, a well-maintained and fully charged ECV should be able to last throughout the day. However, it’s important to take certain precautions to maximize battery life:

Everyone has had a bad experience with someone in an ECV. We are so grateful for these vehicles so we can enjoy Disney with our whole family, but it is important for ECV users to be mindful. These vehicles are big and heavy, and they can really harm others if the driver is not careful. 

Here are some tips to ensure a positive experience for everyone:

• Stay Mindful of Others
  Be aware of your surroundings and the flow of pedestrian traffic. Drive at a moderate speed, especially in crowded areas, and always yield to pedestrians. Slow down or stop when necessary to avoid collisions or congested areas.
  
• Observe Queue Procedures
  Follow the queue procedures for attractions, shows, and dining establishments. Be patient and respectful while waiting in line, and follow Cast Members’ instructions for boarding and disembarking.
  
• Park in Designated Areas
  When you’re not using your ECV, park it in designated areas, especially during attractions, shows, and dining. Make sure it’s out of the way and doesn’t obstruct pathways or entrances.
  
• Use Marked Paths and Entrances
  Stick to marked paths, entrances, and exits for ECVs. Avoid using stairways or other non-designated areas that may not be accessible.

Can You Get DAS with an ECV in Disney?

Being in an Electric Conveyance Vehicle (ECV) at a Disney park is not, in itself, grounds for obtaining the Disability Access Service (DAS) through Disney. The Disability Access Service is a distinct accommodation designed to assist guests with disabilities who face challenges navigating traditional standby queues due to their condition. It aims to create a more inclusive and accessible experience for individuals with disabilities while minimizing their wait times for attractions.

The Disability Access Service (DAS) is not solely based on the use of mobility devices like ECVs. Instead, it is intended for guests with disabilities—such as those with cognitive, sensory, or mobility-related impairments—that prevent them from waiting in a conventional queue environment. The DAS allows these guests and their parties to schedule return times for attractions that are comparable to the current wait times, thereby minimizing the need to physically stand in line. This service recognizes that some disabilities are not immediately visible and ensures that guests with varying needs can enjoy the park’s offerings in a way that is both fair and accommodating.

To obtain the Disability Access Service, guests need to visit a Guest Relations location at the park and discuss their specific accessibility needs with a Cast Member. The Cast Member will provide information on how the DAS works and determine eligibility based on the guest’s individual circumstances. It’s important to note that while mobility devices like ECVs provide valuable assistance to those who require them, the DAS is a separate accommodation that focuses on providing equitable access to attractions for guests with a range of disabilities.

An Inside Look At Our ECV Experience:

I recently went on a full-on Momcation. You read that right. A momcation. Me and my mom hopped on a plane and went to Disney World with no kids and no husbands. Cue the angel choir!

My mom has some mobility issues so she hasn’t been to Disney World in almost 40 years. When I had asked her why not she mentioned that she couldn’t walk that much or stand that long. I got chu, Mom.

I told her, no worries, we are getting an ECV!

Our Rental Experience

We ended up renting from a third party company and it worked better for us than the Disney option. First of all, she was able to order a pink one, and that made her really happy. Plus, we got a great interaction from the cute GI Joe with the pink crayon!

Another reason why third party was great for us is because it was brought to our resort. If you use a Disney rental you cannot get the ECV until you are at the park. That means you are walking to your resort transportation, which could be about a 1/2 mile, standing in line for the transportation, which can easily be 20 minutes, and then walking to the park entrance which in some cases, isn’t super close. Basically, for those with back and mobility issues, your day is over before it began.

Experience with Issues

Having never used an ECV myself I was surprised how efficient Cast Members are at taking an ECV from loading areas on a attraction to the unloading area. Minimal time was spent standing. However, that pesky parking break can be a pain!

Cast Members will set the parking break. It is part of their protocol, so don’t berate them about it. The parking break is on the very bottom behind the back wheel. If not completely disengaged the scooter will seem like the battery is dying even though 2 minutes ago it was full. It was a very scary experience, but ended up it was totally my fault. Oops!

ECVs on Transportation

All ECVs are allowed on Disney transportation. Full disclosure, it is a royal pain. If you have a sweetheart of a bus driver, ask them if they can park it for you. It’s pretty stressful to have to parallel park an awkward vehicle which a touchy accellerator in a tight bus with a whole crowd watching. It was stressful! And I didn’t even do it!

ECVs at Attractions in Disney World

Most queue lines in Disney World are accessible, meaning ECV friendly. That doesn’t mean that they are spacious, so watch your toes. Thanks, ma… My white shoes still have a tire mark. HAHA.

There are attractions that do require you to transfer to a wheel chair in the queue line. Be prepared to just skip those attractions. It was no easy feet pushing an adult in a wheel chair up the ramp for Tower of Terror. And I had to look at the ramp for the PeopleMover and just say no.

But you know what? We had a great time! Who cares if we had to skip a few things.

My mom almost didn’t want to do this because she was ashamed that she needed the scooter. I told her that was ridiculous. Disney World is for everyone. It is a happy place. If you or someone with you needs help getting around, then do it. I promise it will make the whole trip more comfortable and magical!
