One of the rarest things to find in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge is a Black Kyber Crystal. These black crystals are randomly hidden inside the red Kyber Crystal bottles and you never know when you are going to get one. We decided to complete our collection and tackle the journey of finding a black Kyber Crystal in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge.

These are rare crystals that grow throughout the galaxy and hold force powers within it. These crystals are an essential part that powers every lightsaber in the Star Wars universe. In Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge, they sell the individual Kyber Crystals that you can use and swap out in your custom-made lightsaber. They can also be placed inside holocrons and unveil secret messages to you.

Why is a Black Kyber Crystal So Special

The short answer, they are rare and you find them by chance. The hype is extra around this color of Kyber crystal exists because finding on is random and by pure chance. To shed a little more light though there is a special note inside every black Kyber Crystal.

The message inside the black Kyber Crystal reads:

Today you have found something truly special. This small fragment of obsidian is infused with the power of the dark side. When placed inside a lightsaber or a holocron, this rare fragment with unnatural powers mined from dark side shrine will have similar properties as a red Kyber Crystal.

How to Get a Black Kyber Crystal

Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities

The way most people acquire their black Kyber Crystal is by chance at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. This store is located in Batuu at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. You need to buy a SILVER top red Kyber Crystal to have a chance at getting a black one. At random inside these containers are the special black Kyber Crystals. Each Kyber Crystal retails for $17.99.

Black Kyber Crystals on eBay

If you don’t have the means to constantly go to Disney Parks and try your luck at scoring a black Kyber Crystal there is always the resale market. This includes websites like eBay, Mercari, and Poshmark. Prices are all over the range from $200 – $300! If you want to skip the high prices there are some creators who have made replicas that will cost you around $30. Alternatively, there are also some great creators on Etsy as well.

Odds of Getting a Black Kyber Crystal

Disney has yet to come out and state the odds of getting a Black Kyber Crystal at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. Many have speculated that it’s a 1 in a 100 chance.

For science, we set out on our own quest to uncover a black Kyber Crystal. We held to the rules of two each when we go into Batuu and then the merchandise limits dropped since it took us so long so sometimes when we went we would each pick out several. In total, we had to pull 44 red kyber crystals to get a black one. The total investment at the end was $791.56 plus sales tax, and that would be if you had no discounts to help save along the way.

It took us six months so I lost some of the receipts to give an exact number. We do have an annual pass so it was at least 20% less and we went more frequently when they ran two different 30% off merchandise discounts for annual passholders. At this point, I am pretty sure it would have been cheaper to spend the $300 and buy one from someone off eBay.

As for all the duds, aka the red Kyber Crystals, we are going to sell them on eBay as close to cost as possible to help recoup all the tries it’s going to take to find a black one. I highly recommend this as it makes the out-of-pocket costs of finding a black Kyber Crystal much more manageable.

One of our favorite YouTubers, The Ordinary documented their journey to finding the black Kyber Crystal. In total it took them 21 tries to get a black Kyber Crystal, they spent $188 and had a few in there that were gifted from their YouTube following.

Tricks to Finding a Black Kyber Crystal

Flashlight Method

When the Kyber Crystals were first released there was a flashlight hack that quickly when around the community. If you used the flashlight on your cellphone against a red container you could see inside to tell if the crystal was red or black. Of course, this created a fury of people who were shining lights inside Dok Ondar’s trying to find the ones that were black. In response, Disney quickly added a black paper around all the red Kyber Crystals making the flashlight trick null and void. So sadly, this hack no longer works to find a black Kyber Crystal.

Shaking Method

With the flashlight method not working people have been trying to come up with a new way to seek out the black crystals. Inside every Black Kyber crystal canister is an extra piece of paper explaining what you have uncovered. Some theorize that if you shake the canister this extra piece of paper makes it so the crystal doesn’t move and that’s how you know. Others say that if you listen closely you can hear the extra piece of paper rattling around. Sadly, this is a loud store often packed full of people and this trick doesn’t always prove successful.

Once you have a black Kyber Crystal you may be wondering if there are any special effects it will have when placed into a lightsaber. It sounds the exact same as a red and it even will light your saber up red as well.
