For our wedding anniversary this year, we opted to do something completely different from our norm of Disney and decided to reconnect with nature at a Bolt Farm Mirror Cabin in Whitwell, Tennessee. Bolt Farm lets you glamp in the gorgeous beauty that is Tennessee mountains. This property is the vision of a husband and wife duo Seth and Tori Bolt. I stumbled across Bolt Farm from being a fan of the band Seth is in NeedtoBreathe.
What is a Mirror Cabin
Originally designed by an Estonia-based hotel group ÖÖD, the mirror cabins at Bolt Farms are the first located in the United States. These cabins are just 200 sq. ft of indoor space but they pack a punch with three of the walls being floor-to-ceiling glass windows that let you soak in stunning views. The exterior of these windows has a mirror finish allowing you to see out but gives you privacy and does not let others see in. The special glazing on the exterior reflects 97 percent of UV rays to keep the inside cool.
The mirror cabins are designed for two people and are restricted to adults only. If you are looking for a family-friendly option they do have Domes and also a Family Treehouse option.
Inside a Mirror Cabin
After watching way too many episodes of Tiny House Nation, I was thrilled to see if I was cut out for life with less. I was not prepared at all, I loved it, but I brought way too much stuff. Next time we come back I would bring half of what I brought on this trip. You need to go into the space organized otherwise your stuff will take over.
The main area is comprised of a queen-sized bed, a small closet with a projector for watching TV, a kitchenette, and a table with two barstools. Behind the door on the far left is the bathroom.
The bed was insanely comfortable so no need to worry about not having a comfortable night’s sleep. The bed is not up against the window so you can walk around in the middle of the night and not wake your spouse up. I enjoyed throwing the curtains open in the morning and enjoying breakfast in bed while soaking up the views. And for those of you who love to sleep in, the curtains fully close and you can keep it nice and dark.
Outside the Mirror Cabin
Outside every mirror cabin, there is a patio that has a grill with a pizza oven, hammock, table & chairs, firepit, and hot tub. Having the outdoor space effectively doubles your area of peace and relaxation plus this was my favorite area where we hung out the most on our trip.
If you are staying here you must spend some time out there at night, the string lights make it so magical. There is also some epic star gazing to be had. Whitwell is a very small town and there is next to no light pollution, it was the exact opposite of being home in Orlando, Florida.
The biggest test for us was learning how to start a fire and keep it going. Neither of us had done this in well over a decade so it took us a few tries to find success but it was so worth it. They have a whole cabinet of wood bundles and fire starters for you to start your own fire. Our secret to getting a big fire that lasted was to gather kindling (leaves, sticks, and bark) from around our cabin and slowly add it in after we lit the fire starter.
Kitchen in the Mirror Cabin
Cooking at the cabin is essential to getting the most out of your Bolt Farm trip. The closest restaurant is about 30 minutes away, so it takes up a lot of your time if you want to go out to eat. We made this mistake the first night there but thankfully there was a grocery store on our way back from dinner that first night so we bought hot dogs for lunch the next day and chicken and veggies to grill for dinner.
If you are worried there isn’t going to be enough cooking equipment, fear not, this cabin is stocked up! Do note that the mirror cabins do not have a microwave.
Kitchen supplies included:
- Fry Pans
- Tea Kettle
- Pot
- Slotted Spoon
- Spatula
- Can Opener
- Wine Opener
- Pot Holder
- Kitchen Scissors
- Full set of utensils
- Plates
- Bowls
- Cups
Mirror Cabin Bathroom
At the end of the cabin, you have a surprisingly large bathroom (for a tiny home). The shower and toilet are regular size and the same as as standard house. The sink however is extremely tiny. It’s the perfect size for washing your hands but let me tell you brushing your teeth is a whole experience, it was easier to use the kitchen sink.
If you are worried about bathroom privacy there is a frost on the glass so no one can see in, sadly it does haze out the majority of your view from the bathroom. A tip though for when you shower is to use the shower spray it makes you feel like you are in a spa.
Charming Small Touches
There are so many extra special touches packed into each cabin I just had to make sure to include them so you can see the extra mile they go.
Guestbook
They have this beautiful handmade paper notebook in the cabin for you to sign and share your experience during your stay. There are heartwarming stories of people celebrating their anniversaries, other messages are about reconnecting and just the peace that the cabin brings to those who stay there. In this tray, you will also find a coloring book with a small amount of coloring pencils.
Special Note
When we booked our stay at Bolt Farm we let them know we were there to celebrate our wedding anniversary. They left the sweetest note along with chocolate truffles, and a cute set of conversation cards.
Record Player
In the kitchen, you will find some shelves that have unique treasures. I was so delighted to find a vinyl player something we had just recently added to our own home this year. There is a selection of several albums including of course a Needtobreathe vinyl. In this area, you can also find some incense and board games.
Little Library
If you are looking for a new read while you are staying in a cabin there is a little library where you can grab a book or leave a book for the next person staying to read. There are even some authors who have stayed and left signed copies of thier books.
Hiking Around Bolt Farm Property
While you could easily just spend your whole trip hanging out in the area right by your cabin you should venture out onto the hiking trails they have on property. There are some stunning views to be found. Below is the view you get by walking down the trail that heads off by the mirror cabins.
I was looking forward to finding the various waterfalls that they have on the property but they apparently had a very dry summer and they were all dried up. Thankfully I got to catch a big waterfall at Lookout Mountain. We loved our stop there in Chattanooga and was right on our way to the cabin. We were driving in from the South/ Atlanta area.
Be sure to head down all the trails you just never know what treasures you will find. There was a trail that headed under a cliff and at the end there was a tiny cave and it had a wish jar. There was even a pen so you could add your own wishes to the jar.
This is the view we enjoyed when we took the long trail from the mirror cabins all the way over to the Domes. With how the majority of the city is down in between the mountains it feels like you are on top of the world looking down.
Conclusion on Bolt Farm Mirror Cabins
Overall we absolutely loved our stay in the mirror cabin, we would go back in a heartbeat. I think next time we go we will try a treehouse just to switch it up and have the two experiences to compare and see which one is best. If you can make the trip to escape even if it is just for a few days it’s so worth it.
I was also shocked for a cabin how much it felt like we were staying at a five-star resort. Anything would could have needed was there in the cabin, the floors were heated, and there was every streaming service imaginable logged in on their Roku. I was shocked to get a message that there would be a daily cleaning service if we wanted it.
If you are looking to capture your time away at Bolt Farm I highly recommend having a photographer come capture your moment here. We were so lucky to have Ryn Loren capture our memories from this anniversary trip. She arrived ready to shoot hiking boots and all!
I have been visiting the parks annually since my parents first brought me at just a year old. Recently I was able to fulfill my life long dream of being a Florida local and moved from the wintery Northeast to the sunshine and fun of central Florida. Now I am hoping to share my Disney knowledge with you so you can have the best vacation possible!
